I was reminded today of the need to keep things simple.

If you’re struggling to change your diet, just pick one meal like breakfast, and make the change you want to make there.

Review this list and just pick something for breakfast.

My goto meal is bacon, scrambled eggs, avocado and spinach or fresh mushrooms cooked in coconut oil.

I used to think that there was no way I could start the day without fruit toast and jam.

Now it is an easy decision.

One day a week, I can eat as much fruit toast, almond croissants, crepes or whatever else I like.

The other six days I eat:

Bacon and eggs for breakfast (if I don’t have butter coffee – see earlier post)

Lunch is protein (usually a tin of Tuna or leftover dinner from the night before), salad and sour cream.

Dinner is steak/chicken/salmon with a creamy sauce and green veges.

It is super easy.

It is super tasty.

You won’t get hungry.

You will lose weight and preserve muscle.

Let’s do this – what is the worst thing that can happen?

If you want tomorrow to be different, you have to do something different today!

So let us experiment, starting today.

The 4 week Experiment in weekly steps:

Week 1:

Jump on the scales and look in the mirror, take a photo. This is your start point.

Change to Keto breakfast and eat it for 6 days.

Pick a Treat Day. I use Saturday. Eat every treat that you have wanted all week. My Day looks like this, almond crossaints x 2 for breaky, 2 doughnuts for morning tea, crepe and icecream for lunch or bread platter, pasta for dinner followed by Churos and Icecream or Brownies and icecream.  Enjoy – I look forward to Saturdays so much.

Week 2:

Continue Keto breakfast.

Start Keto lunch.

Enjoy treat day!

Week 3:

Continue Keto breakfast.

Continue Keto lunch.

Start Keto dinner.

Enjoy treat day!

Week 4:

Continue Keto breakfast.

Continue Keto lunch.

Continue Keto dinner.

Jump on the scales just before Treat Day – yep amazing Hey. Seriously, how easy was that!

Want to enjoy swimming more – you must meet Shinji Takeuchi

I love Shinji, he has changed the way that I look at a swimming pool.

This week I had the amazing meditative experience of gliding through the water.  My mind wandered and I watched in disbelief as the tiles glided by 6 feet below me. Occasionally I felt my body tense and the familiar feeling of fighting to get my head out of the water would return.

Back to my mantra – Stretch – Pull – Glide…………….

In a moment I was out of the struggle and back to watching the tiles slide under me. This is so awesome!!

On my first attempt at the Shinji method, I managed to swim 500 meters.

On my second attempt, two days later, I swam one kilometer, without stopping and I could have done more only my son was patiently waiting for me to finish.

Oh, and I have not swum laps for at least 5 years!

“Did you watch me swimming mate?” I blurted at him when I get out of the pool.

“Yep” he casually responded, without a hint of interest, typical of a teenager.

Maybe he would be more impressed if he understood how different this experience was to my history of swimming.

Prior to this week, I hated it.

Every stroke was a fight.  A fight for air, a fight for momentum, a fight for traction in a wet, slippery, world.  It was not fun, it was not a meditative relaxing activity, it sucked.  I had to psych myself up to practice for a couple of weeks just to get through the 500 meter swim that I needed to pass my fitness test.

This week, that all disappeared.

This week was Stretch – Pull – Glide.

I just had to relax and let my arms pull me through the water.  When I got tense, I struggled. When I relaxed, I slipped back into the meditative beauty of effortless movement.  I am no Shinji, not yet, but I am not the thrashing machine that I was the week before.

More than anything, this week has taught me that I can learn very very fast, even if it is something that I have been doing all of my life.

I just need to deconstruct the the activity and sequence the learning.  This was so simple and it is crazy to think how much I have struggled to swim in the past.  So what is next, what else can I learn in super fast time?

Check out Tim’s book, The 4-Hour Chef where you can find everything that you need to know about meta learning or learning super fast!  Tim describes this book as a book on meta learning disguised as a cook book.  Well, I just learnt how to swim  from this cook book – so I guess he is right.

Jumping – Good for the Lymph System

A video of Tony Robins jumping before going stage on popped up on my U tube feed.   Apparently I had searched for something to do with Tony and now Google was serving up what it thought I wanted.  Nothing like getting advice from my phone : )

But I was intrigued.  Why is he doing this?

Love him or hate him, he is good, very good at what he does.  The reason for his success is that he has honed his skills over time, developing a suite of tools and tricks to help him get into the emotional state that he needs to influence people.

So why jumping?

Turns out that there is an excellent reason for this and benefits are not restricted to super heroes of the self empowerment world.  We can all benefit from this and I will share how I use this drill and a bazaar thing that happened to me recently, but first check out what the experts have to say.

The body has a built-in need for activation.  Without adequate movement, the cells are left stewing in their own waste products and starving for nutrients, a situation that contributes to arthritis, cancer and other degenerative diseases.

Vigorous exercise such as rebounding [jumping on a therapeutic mini-trampoline] is reported to increase lymph flow by 15 to 30 times. 

Let me jump in here.  You don’t need a trampoline.  You can jump anywhere or you can skip rope.

Rebounding’s alternating weightlessness and double gravity produce a pumping action that pulls out waste products from the cells and forces into them oxygen and nutrition from the bloodstream.

The Detoxification Effect of Rebounding

The lymphatic system is the metabolic garbage can of the body. The Muscular Effect of Rebounding

James White, Ph.D., director of research and rehabilitation in the physical education department at the University of California at San Diego (UCSD), has explained how jumping for health offers a true physical strengthening effect to the muscles.

An advocate of rebounding for athletic conditioning, White uses the rebounder in his rehabilitation program at UCSD. “When you jump, jog, and twist on this [jumping] device, you can exercise for hours without getting tired. It’s great practice for skiing, it improves your tennis stroke, and it’s a good way to burn off calories and lose weight,” says White.

Other benefits include:

  • 20 minutes of rebounding = 1 hour of running for cardiovascular workout
  • Easy on the bones and joints (when using a therapeutic rebounder)
  • Rebounding strengthens the heart muscle
  • Profound body detoxification is possible
  • regular bowel movements to chronically constipated persons.
  • Digestion is improved .

It is important to realize that as you age, your body may become more toxic due to the pollutants in today’s world. It is also important to realize that if you have a disease, your cellular structure is compromised, as your cells are already being robbed of the correct oxygen, mineral and nutrient compounds that they need to stay healthy.

So this is my drill:

Every time I walk downstairs at my home, I jump 10 times = 60 jumps yesterday at home.

Every time I get out of the car – I jump 5 times = 25 jumps.

85 jumps for the day and I feel amazing afterwards, the image of Rocky Balboa comes to mind : )

So last week I got a cold. My usual cold routine is 2 weeks and it drives me crazy. This time it lasted 5 days and I jumped continually while unwell.

Coincidence?

Perhaps, whether it is science or placebo, it is only good for me.

Can you build muscle on a Ketogenic diet – yes you can

“So what about building muscle, can you do that on Ketogenic Diet?”  My friend had posed the question as we discussed the many benefits of being in Ketosis.  Lets see what the experts have to say about the topic, starting with Author, speaker and nutritional consultant Mike Roussel, PhD who is known for transforming complex nutritional concepts into practical nutritional habits.

In his article at bodybuilding.com Mike explains:

Staying on a ketogenic diet means eating so few carbohydrates that when your glycogen stores empty, your body cashes-in on a process called ‘ketosis’ for energy. The carbohydrate threshold to stay in ketosis will vary by individual, but the guideline for most folks is fewer than 50 grams of carbs.  I was dead-set on eating fewer than 20 grams of carbohydrates per day. How low is that? One medium banana would place you over your daily limit!

Wait, don’t carbs stimulate muscle growth? How could this work in the long term? More important, can I add 80 pounds to my deadlift without eating much carbs? These questions and more piqued the scientist in me.

The article discusses in depth the benefits of carbohydrates for those serious to build muscle but circles back to end with these comments.

He continues:

The human body is an amazing machine, possessing the ability to make intelligent adaptations to a variety of situations.  Carbs are not required to flip the protein synthesis switch, but perhaps there are other ways to make the overall anabolic process more efficient and effective.

In a chronically low-carb environment, the body doesn’t follow the normal biochemical rules because it has to change. It becomes much more efficient with muscle glycogen.

Mike was able to add 80 pounds to his deadlift while eating less than 20 grams (1 x banana) of carbohydrates.

Introducing Dr Peter Attia

Let me introduce you to Doctor Peter Attia.  I recently listened to a Podcast of the Tim Ferris Show that involved an interview with Peter on their visit to Easter Island. Peter is another Doctor who through researching the causes of heart disease, has been able to understand the impact of diet and the real cause of coronary disease.

This is an extract from his blog. Take 5 minutes to read this extract and then I urge you to go to his page and view the slides in which he takes you step by step through how inflammation occurs.

When I’m at a dinner party and someone starts lecturing the table about the perils of saturated fat (or red meat, or eggs, or fill-in-the-blank), I’m at the point – after years of being kicked under the table by my wife – of just asking the “authority” at the table one question:  Why do you believe this is true?

I figure, put the burden of proof on them, right?  This week, and I apologize for how long overdue this post is, I’m going to get into the details of how this country (and many others who followed our lead) came to believe one of the most pervasive myths in the entire field of nutrition.

Ok, I have to jump in here.  This is truly amazing.  The myth that Dr Attia is alluding to is the flawed research of Ancel Benjamin Keys (January 26, 1904 – November 20, 2004). Keys was an American scientist who studied the influence of diet on health. In particular, he hypothesised that saturated fat in the diet is unhealthy and should be avoided.  That is all that it was, a hypothesis!  Today, more and more research is proving this to be wrong. Ok, back to Dr Attia’s post:

To write it all out would require a tome.  In fact, such a tome already exists.  It’s called Good Calories, Bad Calories. But for most people, especially the “authorities” who already “know” the answer, it’s a complex and lengthy book.  Furthermore, it’s not exactly something you can just whip out at a dinner party.

A few weeks ago I gave a talk at the UCSD medical school.  I was asked to give a talk about “ethics.”  While I have no professional training as an ethicist, I still think I have a good idea about what is and is not ethical.  As I’ve learned more and more about this topic, it appears to me that the state of our current nutritional environment, with food policies based on just about everything but rigorous, experimental science, couldn’t make much ethical sense.  I’m pretty sure if Plato, Aristotle, and Nietzsche were still around they’d be disgusted with how we got here.  So, I was happy to take this opportunity to speak with a group of thought leaders on this important topic.

I am going to post some of my daily meals but first, let me explain my breakfast that I am absolutely loving……Bullet Proof Coffee.  Well, that is the name of the original coffee butter combination.

My recipe below is a little different to the original recipe (which is made on black coffee)

  • 1 medium size Latte with 2 shots of expresso
  • 5 mls of MCT Oil
  • 5 mls of Coconut Oil
  • 20 gram cube of Westgold Unsalted NZ Butter (Grass fed)
  • 2 drops of Stevia liquid

Most cows are corn or soy fed. It’s cheap and filling, but cows aren’t actually meant to eat that- they can’t even digest it properly- and their milk produces the kinds of fats you don’t want in your body.
