Eating cheese may increase levels of good cholesterol, says Danish study

It may be high in fat, but cheese could be good for you, a Danish study has found.

A study from the University of Copenhagen has found that eating cheese could elevate levels of “good” cholesterol or high-density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol.

In the 12-week study, 139 adults were split into three groups. One group of participants ate 80g of high-fat cheese every day, one ate 80g of reduced-fat cheese while the last group ate no cheese, and 90g of jam and bread each day.

Those who ate the high-fat cheese saw an increase in their “good” cholesterol, said the report in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition on Aug 24.

There was no difference in low-density lipoprotein cholesterol or “bad” cholesterol in the test subjects.

The fact that HDL Cholesterol went up is significant when you consider this in light of the current nutritional advice, which lists cheese among high-fat foods, such as red meat, butter, fried foods, to avoid.

“Blood pressure and waist circumference did not differ significantly between the the diets,” researchers said.

The evidence is starting to mount and studies like this are only providing more weight to the argument that diets that are high in saturated fats are not the villains they were thought to be.  Next, we will look at the evidence supporting the consumption of eggs.

I can tell you from the outset, some of the things that you’re going to read in this blog and the recommended books are going to rub you the wrong way.

Prepare yourself with an open mind.

We’ve all grown up believing the food pyramid that came from ‘The Experts’.

Did you know that the expert’s opinion is research that was conducted in the 1950’s and that in the opinion of some medical experts, the research was flawed?  Really!

Today we have an invaluable opportunity to be able to educate ourselves like never before. We can access health experts and thought leaders from around the world in just a few clicks. We can make our own informed decision based on our judgments and interpretation of all of the information that is in front of us.

The challenge for me has always been finding time to read. I’m a slow reader, live an active life and struggle with dropping everything to focus my attention on written content. My learning curve increased dramatically when I discovered audiobooks.

Now I can learn while I’m driving to work, riding my pushbike, working out or just going for a walk.  In the last year, I been had a read more books than I have in my whole life. In the last 2 months I’ve also found an app called Blink list. This amazing app summarises full-length books into 10 to 15 minutes summaries which are called ‘blinks’. You get just the key points. Fast, simple and fun.
